Bev’s Wheaten History
I was looking for a dog in 1975 and read about a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier.
“A Wheaten is a medium-size dog with a soft coat that does not shed,” the book read. I just had to see one in person. I went to a dog show and found one up on a grooming table. I went up to the dog and he put his arms around my neck and gave me a big kiss. I was sold. My next task was to try and find one. I called all over the country, and someone gave me the name and number of a breeder, Marjorie Shoemaker, Waterford Wheatens. I was in luck, she had puppies.
Waterford Mr. McGillycuddy (Gilly) was a love of a dog for my first Wheaten. Anything and everything you could ask for in a dog. I bought Gilly as a pet, but as Marjorie groomed him for me, she suggested we show him. So off to handling class Gilly and I went.
Gilly hated to be in ring but loved going to the shows
and being around all the people. I was hooked on showing,
so in December of 1977 when Marjorie had another litter, a little
girl came to live with us.
She became Ch Waterford Red Rose, ROM who was a
wonderful show girl. Marjorie finished her in five shows, each
show was a major. While Red Rose was away, Gilly would
not eat and would pout all day long. He missed his pal.
Marjorie had another litter, and a little puppy bitch in the
litter needed socialization. We thought that this baby could
keep Gilly company while Red Rose was away at shows.
She came home one day and never went back to Marjorie.
This little girl became Ch Waterford Welcome Visitor and
between her and Red Rose, they became the foundation bitches
of the Greentree breeding program.
Around this time I met and married Kevin who loved my dogs
and joined me in their care and training in and out of the show ring.
To open up the gene pool and have healthy happy dogs Kevin
and I brought in new blood from Europe where the breed originated.
Two important females joined our family. Maroc Marie Antoinette
(Claddy as she is known to everyone) was imported from Ireland and Ch Wheaten Rebel’s Eve of Destruction (Katrina) was imported from the very famous Wheaten Rebel Kennel in Germany.
